Clemson Floormats And Fun Facts

The Clemson Tigers are the official athletic team of Clemson U, and play in Division 1 in the NCAA, as a fellow member of the Atlantic Division in the Atlantic Coast Conf.. They were given their title in 1986, when football coach Walter Riggs initially came to Tigerland, then known as the Clemson Agricultural College of So. Carolina. He came to the school from an SEC College. Riggs had a deep appreciation for the Princeton Tigers, so it was because of this that he named the team’s mascot Tiger the mascot.

The South Carolina Gamecocks are Clemson’s biggest rival, in all each sport, not just the football program. They play once again each year, and the game receives a lot of attention across the country, and is regarded as one of the must see rivalry games every year. Their other in league rivals includes Georgia Tech, NC State, Boston Varsity and Miami.

The Clemson Tigers have won 59.1% of their matches heading into the 2010 ball season, higher-ranking them 34th in the standings. They have won the most Atlantic Coast Conference meeting championships at fourteen. They last won the title in 2011. Just before joining the ACC, they also claimed 2 Southern Meeting titles. They have cooperated in 33 bowl games, winning 16, and in 1981 they became the 1st team in class history to win a nationwide championship, defeating Nebraska 22-15 in the Orange Bowl. They finished that year 12-0 and were ranked 1 in the AP and coaches opinion poll. They were also ratified by the NCAA the next year for having well over 150 documented infractions.

One practice the squad does before every home game, is the “most exciting 25 seconds in college football”. The squad ended their pre-game stretching and heads to the locker room, with 5 minutes until game time. At that point, there are 3 caravans that leave and bring the players to a peak of The Hill. At that point, the football team joins together at the very top, and rubs “Howards Rock”. The expiring band then plays Tiger Rag, and a canon is shot, with the Tigers barrel down the hill onto the field before 83,000 wild sports fans on Clemson floormats.

Their famous Tiger Paw emblem was suggested in 1970, and has been used since then. It was inspired by a Bengal Tiger in the St. Louis Zoo. John Antonio created the logo which was highly-developed by Helen Weaver, a member of an ad company in Greenville, SC. The SC Beta Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity has sole rights to employ the emblem and they paint it on many of the roads that are bearing into the hostile town. The Clemson Tigers floormats official colours are purple and orange. One proud tradition is their fight tune, the Tiger Rag, “the song that shakes the southland”. This song is played at all Clemson sporting events and following gigantic plays, and in the “most exciting 25 seconds in varsity football”. The band spells out of Clemson at the end of the song.
